External Wall Insulation Case Study in South Oxhey

Improving Comfort and Appearance with Mineral Wool External Wall Insulation

Pyramid Eco installed external wall insulation on a home in South Oxhey in collaboration with Watford and Three Rivers.

The measure was recommended following a retrofit assessment to improve the home’s energy efficiency and comfort. The work was completed during winter, so the team had to plan carefully around cold and wet weather.

Once complete, the home looked noticeably better on the outside and felt more comfortable year-round.

Project Snapshot:

Location: South Oxhey, Hertfordshire

Property Type: Residential home

Client: Homeowner

Purpose: Improve energy efficiency, comfort, and external appearance

Solution: External wall insulation

System: Mineral wool external wall insulation

Funding: Warm Homes: Local Grant

Delivered under: Watford Borough Council and Three Rivers District Council scheme

The Challenge

The property had protruding cornerboard detailing, which made the installation more complex than a standard external wall insulation project.

To meet TrustMark requirements and protect against water penetration, the system needed to maintain a minimum overhang of 40mm. This detail had to be resolved before the system could be installed correctly.

The project was also completed during winter, so weather conditions had to be monitored closely throughout the programme.

Why Pyramid Eco?

The homeowner and project partners needed an installer who could manage the technical details and resident communication.

Pyramid Eco delivered both.

Retrofit-Led Approach

The measure was chosen following a retrofit assessment, ensuring the work was suitable for the property rather than selected in isolation.

Coordination with the Retrofit Coordinator

Where detailing challenges were identified, Pyramid Eco worked with the Retrofit Coordinator to resolve them correctly and meet the relevant requirements.

Mineral Wool as Standard

Pyramid Eco installs mineral wool external wall insulation because it provides an A1 fire-rated system, supporting compliance and giving homeowners greater confidence.

Resident Communication

The project was completed during winter, so the weather sometimes paused the work. Pyramid Eco kept the resident informed, explaining when work could resume and why delays were necessary.

Our Approach: A Compliant Mineral Wool EWI System

Pyramid Eco installed a mineral wool external wall insulation system to improve the property’s thermal performance.

Mineral wool was chosen because Pyramid Eco has decided to install only mineral wool EWI systems. While it is more expensive than some alternatives, it provides strong fire performance and helps keep homes ahead of changing industry expectations.

System: Mineral wool external wall insulation

Fire Rating: A1 fire-rated system

Timeline: Just over four weeks

Key Requirement: Minimum 40mm overhang to protect against water penetration

The installation was managed carefully around the property’s existing detailing. The cornerboards protruded from the wall, so the team worked with the Retrofit Coordinator to make sure the system could be installed correctly and meet TrustMark requirements.

Overcoming Key Challenges

  • Winter Installation

The work took place during a colder, wetter period of the year. External wall insulation cannot be installed properly in heavy rain or very low temperatures because the system needs the right conditions to adhere correctly. Pyramid Eco managed the programme around the weather and kept the homeowner updated when work had to pause.

  • Cornerboard Detailing

The cornerboards on the property protruded significantly from the wall. This created a challenge around the required overhang for water penetration protection. Pyramid Eco worked with the Retrofit Coordinator to resolve the detailing and ensure the system was installed correctly.

  • Minimising Disruption

The project took just over four weeks. During that time, Pyramid Eco focused on clear communication with the resident. The team explained what was happening, when work would take place, and why any delays were necessary.

  • Choosing the Right System

Some older EWI installations in the area use EPS. Pyramid Eco chose mineral wool because it is A1 fire-rated and better aligned with the direction of the industry. This gives homeowners more confidence, especially when properties may later be subject to EWS1 checks from solicitors or mortgage lenders.

Results and Benefits

The homeowner was very happy with the finished result. Before the work began, the property’s external appearance was poor. After installation, the home was noticeably cosmetically improved.

There was also a marked difference in comfort. During cold weather, the house felt warmer once the work was complete. As the weather grew hotter, the property also felt cooler, providing the household a benefit in both winter and summer.

Key Outcomes:

  • Improved external appearance of the home
  • Warmer internal conditions during colder weather
  • Cooler internal conditions during hotter weather
  • Improved thermal performance through external wall insulation
  • A1 fire-rated mineral wool system installed
  • Project completed in just over four weeks despite winter weather conditions
  • Resident kept informed throughout the works.

Client Satisfaction

The homeowner, Steve, was very happy with the finished result. Before the work started, he felt the property looked poor from the outside. After installation, he said the house looked much better and that both he and his wife were pleased with the transformation.

He also noticed a practical comfort benefit. The home felt warmer after completion during a cold period, then cooler when the weather became hotter.

Homeowner comment:

“The house is so much better than it was. Once it was completed, it made the house feel that much warmer. Now that the weather has turned and it’s a lot hotter, we’re noticing the house being that much cooler.”
