What is the Warm Homes: Local Grant?
The Warm Homes: Local Grant (WHLG) is a £500 million Government scheme, delivered through local authorities, that pays for energy performance upgrades and low-carbon heating in low-income households across England. If your home qualifies, the work is fully funded – you pay nothing towards the cost of the measures installed. To qualify, your home needs an EPC rating of D, E, F or G and must be owner-occupied or privately rented.

The three ways to qualify
1. Your postcode (the checker above). If your postcode falls within IMD Income Deciles 1–2 – the Government’s official measure of income deprivation – your household qualifies via Pathway 1 with no income checks at all.
2. Income-related benefits. If someone in your household receives a means-tested benefit (such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit), you can qualify wherever you live, subject to your council’s verification.
3. Household income of £36,000 or less. If your gross household income is £36,000 a year or less, you can also qualify – again verified by your local authority. Privately rented homes can qualify too, with contribution rules for landlords depending on portfolio size.

Why your postcode’s eligibility may have changed in 2026
The Government updated the English Indices of Deprivation in October 2025 – the first refresh since 2019 – and published a new eligible-postcode list in February 2026. That means some postcodes that didn’t qualify before are now eligible, and some that previously qualified are not. Our checker always uses the latest official list, so it’s worth re-checking even if you looked into the scheme last year.

My postcode isn’t on the list – can I still get the grant?

Is the Warm Homes: Local Grant really free?
Yes – for eligible owner-occupied homes the upgrades are fully funded by Government, with no contribution from you. Privately rented properties qualify with landlord contribution rules depending on how many properties the landlord owns.
What EPC rating does my home need?
Your home needs an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D, E, F or G. If you don’t know your rating, we can look it up for you when you enquire.
