It’s a way for public health experts to quantify the impact of different risks and prioritize intervention efforts. For instance, DALYs help us understand the true impact of smoking, road traffic incidents, and indoor air quality on public health. The fact that poor indoor air quality results in the loss of over 2,000 DALYs per 100,000 people highlights its seriousness, equating it with some of the more notorious public health threats.

Key Indoor Pollutants

Research shows that 75% of harm in homes comes from particulate matter (PM), and 95% of this harm can be attributed to five key pollutants. PM is particularly prevalent, originating from activities such as cooking, traffic pollution that enters the home, mould spores, and even some household products. These particles can penetrate deep into our lungs and contribute to serious health conditions.

Health Impacts

The impact of indoor air pollution is profound, with links to 28,000 to 36,000 premature deaths annually in the UK alone. Vulnerable groups, such as those experiencing fuel poverty or living in overcrowded homes, are most affected. Radon gas, which seeps into homes from the ground, is responsible for nearly 1,000 cases of lung cancer annually in the UK. Poor indoor air quality also exacerbates asthma and other respiratory diseases, significantly affecting individuals’ health and well-being.

Real-World Cases

The tragic stories of individuals like Awaab Isak, a two-year-old who died from exposure to mould in social housing, and Ella, a nine-year-old whose death was the first in the UK to have air pollution officially listed as a cause, underline the real-world consequences of poor indoor air quality. These cases remind us of the critical need for better assessment and monitoring of air quality in social housing. Traditional natural ventilation, such as trickle vents and intermittent fans, often falls short, partly due to misuse—people frequently close vents to keep out the cold, unaware of the potential impact on air quality. Mechanical ventilation systems, while an alternative, also have limitations. Many fans sold in the UK are unable to maintain adequate airflow continuously without noise issues.

Environmental Monitoring and Air Quality Management

One solution for addressing poor air quality in social housing is environmental monitoring. By implementing IAQ systems, landlords can proactively detect early signs of fuel poverty, mould growth, or issues in vacant properties. Interestingly, tenants are also becoming more involved by collecting their own air quality data, which could change the dynamic between tenants and housing providers.

This includes identifying touchpoints with different teams—such as void management or damp response teams—and ensuring that mechanical systems meet flow rate standards. Indoor air quality is a critical but often overlooked component of health and well-being in social housing. Addressing this requires a combined approach—implementing monitoring systems, ensuring proper ventilation, and involving both tenants and landlords in the process.

By improving ventilation and air quality, we can create safer, healthier homes for those who need them most. Fixing issues after they’ve occurred is not ideal, but must absolutely be prioritised for and budgeted for if we are to avoid some of the mould-related tragedies that have become all too familiar in the media.
